Leading architects and builders will reveal collaborative strategies to create healthcare facilities where caregivers provide top-flight medical care during and after natural disasters in the fall 2018 Architecture-For-Health Lecture Series at the Texas A&M College of Architecture.

This fall’s public lectures, “Healthcare Facilities Designed for Resiliency," will take place most Fridays at 12:40 p.m. in the [KAMU-TV studios] (https://www.google.com/maps/place/KAMU-TV/@30.6084821,-96.3397015,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x8646839c13803a69:0x37c29806dae4f6ea!8m2!3d30.6084821!4d-96.3375128) , 900 Houston St. on the Texas A&M campus.

The series is also offered to students as a one-hour credit course: ARCH 681 for graduate students and ARCH 481 for undergraduates.

Licensed architects attending the lectures are eligible to earn continuing education credits in health, safety and welfare topic areas.

The increasing severity and frequency of natural disasters requires healthcare facilities that can treat hazard victims while remaining operational in every stage of a disaster, said George J. Mann, series coordinator and holder of the Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design.

“Designers and builders are responding to natural hazard threats by creating disaster-resilient healthcare facilities that play a crucial role in communities dealing with the effects of hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes and other natural catastrophes,” said Mann.

The series is also coordinated by Zhipeng Lu, senior architecture lecturer and associate director of the Texas A&M [Center for Health Systems and Design] (http://chsd.arch.tamu.edu/) , Bita Kash, director of the university’s [Center for Health Organization Transformation] (https://sph.tamhsc.edu/research/centers/chot.html) , and Hao Huang, president of the Student Health Environments Association

They partnered with Patrick Suermann, head of the Department of Construction Science, and Hernan Guerra Santos, the department's industry relations coordinator, to present this semester's series.

The lectures are sponsored by Ronald L. Skaggs ‘65, chairman emeritus, [HKS Inc.] (http://www.hksinc.com/) , and Joseph G. Sprague ‘70, principal, senior vice president and healthcare director, HKS Inc., through the Skaggs – Sprague Endowed Chair of Health Facilities Design.
