Designers to discuss healthcare challenges presented by state’s changing demographic profile

Leading designers and facility planners will address healthcare issues and opportunities associated with Texas’ growing population and changing demographics in the spring 2017 Architecture-For-Health Lecture Series at the Texas A&M College of Architecture.

The series, “Texas 2025: Toward Improved Health and Health Facility Design,” is open to the public and takes place 12:40 – 1:30 p.m. most Fridays in Francis Hall 102.

The state’s population, according to a projection by the University of Houston’s Hobby Center for Public Policy, will reach 37.2 million in 2030, a 9 percent increase from 2010’s total of 25.1 million. The center also projects an older, more ethnically diverse population in 2030.

“In addition to these changes, some Texans must travel many miles to access health services and health facilities,” said George J. Mann, the lecture series’ coordinator and holder of the Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design. “These distances present special challenges for emergency providers and create opportunities to provide care remotely through video-conferencing equipment, mobile devices, monitoring and other digital means.”

Licensed architects attending the lectures are eligible to earn continuing education credits in health, safety and welfare topic areas.

The lectures are also coordinated by Zhipeng Lu, senior lecturer of architecture and associate director, Center for Health Systems and Design, which is presenting the series with the Texas A&M College of Architecture, the [School of Public Health] (https://sph.tamhsc.edu/) , and the National Science Foundation Center for Health Organization Transformation.

Additional lecture series coordinators include Bita Kash, director of the Texas A&M Center for Health Organization Center for Health Organization Transformation and Pranav Shauche, president of the Student Health Environments Association.
