Lecture sponsors, acknowledgements
Designers, healthcare administrators and thought leaders from Africa, France, Belgium, and the United States will discuss health facility design and environmental health issues in Africa during the Fall 2015 Architecture-For-Health Lecture Series at the Texas A&M College of Architecture.
The lectures, open to the public, will take place on most Fridays during the fall 2015 semester at 11:30 a.m. in Langford C105.
“Africa is a complex and challenging continent with a tremendous need to develop community-oriented health facilities and improve environmental health,” said George J. Mann, lecture series coordinator and holder of the Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design.
The series is also coordinated by Zhipeng Lu, a lecturer in the Department of Architecture, with assistance from Macharia Waruingi, chief executive officer of the Ustawi Biomedical Research, Innovation and Industrial Centers of Africa, Inc.
This fall’s series, “Africa: Toward Improved Health & Health Facility Design,” is a collaborative effort between the College of Architecture, the [Center for Health Systems & Design] (http://chsd.arch.tamu.edu/) , Texas A&M University, the National Science Foundation-funded [Center for Health Organization Transformation] (http://www.chotnsf.org/) and the [School of Public Health] (https://sph.tamhsc.edu/) at Texas A&M Health Science Center.
Chronic Disease Concerns in Africa
The lecture series will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4 in Langford C105 with two keynote addresses from speakers introduced by Jorge Vanegas, dean of the Texas A&M College of Architecture. Jay E. Maddock, dean of the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health, will present a lecture series keynote address, “Chronic Disease Concerns in Africa.”
Health Needs in Africa
Forster Ndubisi, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, will present “Health Needs in Africa.”
UBRICA Vision and Update
Macharia Waruingi, chief executive officer of the Ustawi Biomedical Research, Innovation and Industrial Centers of Africa, Inc., (UBRICA) will present “Chronic Disease Concerns in Africa and a UBRICA Vision and Update.”
Africa: Past, Present & Future
Remi Douah, senior public health advisor, Center for Design in Health, University of Minnesota, will present “Africa: Past, Present & Future,” at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11 in Langford C105.

Implications for Designing Health Facilities
Uwemedimbuk Smart Ekanem, an academic visitor at Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas and senior lecturer of clinical sciences and community medicine, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, will present “Health Seeking Behavior of Africans: Implications for Designing Health Facilities,” 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18 in Langford C105.
Medical Ministry in Uganda
Jason Segner, director of Healing Faith, a ministry that seeks to provide physical, emotional and spiritual healing to people in Uganda, will present “Medical Ministry in Uganda.”

Carlton, Jr.,managing member of PK Concepts, LLC, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General, former surgeon general of the U.S. Air Force and a retired Texas A&M Health Science Center professor of surgery, will present “Africa is a Looming Concern: What can Texas A&M University Do About It?” at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25 in Langford C105.

Brian Briscoe, an associate at HKS Inc., Dallas, will present “Nelson Mandela Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa,” and Southern Ellis, a healthcare fellow at HKS Architects in Dallas will present “Songambele Hospital for Father Paul and his Community In Nkolo, Tanzania” 11:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 2 in Langford C105. Both speakers are former students in Texas A&M’s Architecture-For-Health studio and are part of teams designing numerous hospitals throughout the world.

Isaac Thompson Amos, managing director and chief executive, Thompson & Grace Pharmaceuticals Limited, and Macharia Waruingi, chief executive officer of the Ustawi Biomedical Research, Innovation and Industrial Centers of Africa, Inc. will present “Design of the Thompson & Grace Medical City in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria,”11:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16 in Langford C105.
Also presenting will be faculty members who led or assisted with a 2015 design studio at Texas A&M in which students created design concepts for the city: Forster Ndubisi, head of the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning; Chanam Lee, associate professor of landscape architecture; Zhipeng Lu, architecture lecturer, and George J. Mann , professor of architecture and the Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA Endowed Professor of Health Facilities Design. Dan Luhrs, associate principal and senior vice president of HKS Inc. will also discuss the medical city project.
