Former student’s home, furniture designs lauded on blog, in gallery

It’s been a notable fall 2011 for Texas A&M environmental design graduate [Russell Buchanan] (http://www.russellbuchanan.com/) ‘83, whose Modern house design is making waves in an upscale Highland Park neighborhood while his furniture designs were featured in a retrospective at one of the most respected galleries in the U.S.

“Buchanan has challenged us to think about what design for our time really means,” said the Dallas Morning News’ Christopher Wynn about Buchanan’s Highland Park design.

The residence, a steel box with a translucent vestibule, is practical, energy efficient and filled with extraordinarily beautiful details, wrote Wynn in a [blog] (http://shoppingblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/10/post-183.html) posted Oct. 5, 2011.

The retrospective of Buchanan’s furniture designs, including chairs, benches, stools and tables, took place at [Collage 20th Century Classics] (http://collageclassics.com/) , a gallery nationally recognized for its extensive collection of important architect-designed furniture, objects and lighting.

“I am interested in creating projects recognized for their poetic simplicity, sculptural composition and geometric rigor, but also for their attention to detail and integrity of craft,” he told June Mattingly in her blog, [Texas Contemporary Art] (http://texascontemporaryart.com/2011/11/05/architect-russell-buchanan-exhibits-his-one-of-a-kind-or-limited-edition-furniture-with-collage%E2%80%99s-mid-century-classical-modern-until-nov-30/) .
