Renowned scholar discussed link between place and well-being

Esther Sternberg

Renowned neuroscientist Esther Sternberg discussed whether one’s surroundings have the power to heal in “Healing Space: The Science of Place and Well-Being,” in Geren Auditorium at Texas A&M University.

Sternberg, professor of medicine at the University of Arizona at Tucson, is an internationally recognized scholar whose collaborative investigations have led to major discoveries regarding how illness and healing are affected by interactions between mind, body, stress and environment.

Her public lecture was sponsored by the Texas A&M College of Architecture with support from the university’s [Health Science Center] (http://tamhsc.edu/) and the [College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences] (http://vetmed.tamu.edu/) .

Sternberg’s best-selling popular books “ [Healing Spaces: The Science of Place and Well-Being] (http://www.esthersternberg.com/healingspaces.htm) ” and “ [The Balance Within: The Science Connecting Health and Emotions] (http://www.esthersternberg.com/balanceReview.htm) ” are scientifically based inspirations for lay persons and professionals seeking answers to the complexities of stress, place, healing, and wellness.

“Healing Spaces” was recognized by the president of the American Institute of Architects as an inspiration for launching the AIA’s [Design and Health initiative] (http://www.aia.org/practicing/designhealth/) .

Sternberg discussed how people can create a place of peace, and the brain’s role in healing, in “ [The Science of Healing] (http://www.esthersternberg.com/The_Science_of_Healing_with_Dr_Esther_Sternberg.htm) ,” a PBS program that aired in 2009.
