Service learning, in which students learn and develop through engaging human and community needs and structured opportunities for reflection, will become part of the teaching repertoire of two Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning faculty members who recently received spring 2013 Texas A&M service-learning faculty fellowships.

Geoffrey Booth, coordinator of the Master of Land and Property Development program, and Ming Han-Li, associate professor of landscape architecture, will attend a series of workshops in 2013, where they will learn to weave service-learning projects into their classes; topics include course and syllabus design, facilitating critical reflection, building community partnerships and international service-learning.

The fellowship program is a partnership between the Center for Teaching Excellence, Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies and the Department of Student Activities’ Leadership and Service Center.

The fellowship is based on the concept that true campus and community engagement occurs when a student’s personal development is fully integrated with learning — a “co-curricular” experience.

Service-based learning is seen as a way to positively effect students through personal, social and learning outcomes, career development and an enhanced relationship with the university. Inversely, the process also has a positive impact on faculty, the university and its community.

Service learning is referenced in Texas A&M’s Vision 2020, which reinforces the university’s support for faculty who incorporate innovative pedagogical practices that enhance the undergraduate academic experience.
