Schiffhauer’s work to be featured on TV's 'Brazos Valley Magazine'

In the next edition of [KAMU-TV] (http://kamu.tamu.edu/) ’s “Brazos Valley Magazine,” artist Robert Schiffhauer, a professor of architecture at Texas A&M University, will discuss his acclaimed “ [Torchbearers] (http://archone.tamu.edu/college/news/newsletters/spring2009/stories/schiffhauerShow.html) ” portrait series featuring prominent figures in African-American history.

“Torchbearers,” said Schiffhauer, are “those who light our way towards just societies that build up institutions for racial equality, freedom of speech, human rights, healthy environments, and wise use of resources of land and sea.”

The artist’s oeuvre also includes portraits of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Texas A&M professor [Charles Gordone] (http://one.arch.tamu.edu/news/2011/4/28/schiffhauer-gordone-exhibit/) . An actor, director and activist, Gordone won the 1970 Pulitzer for his play, “No Place to Be Somebody: A Black Black Comedy.” He was the first black playwright to win the award, which offers an intimate glimpse into racial tensions of the civil rights era.

“A conversation with this interesting artist is like a personal encounter with poets, writers, and university students in 1961,” said the show’s host, Sharon Colson, assistant director of KAMU-TV, the local PBS affiliate serving the Bryan and College Station area. “How often does a viewer have the opportunity to look through the eyes and the emotions of those who lived it?”

The show is scheduled for broadcast Dec. 22 at 8 p.m., Dec. 24 at 6 p.m., Dec. 25 at 5 p.m., Jan. 5 at 8 p.m., Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
