Wright Gallery 2019 opening exhibit to showcase esteemed Austin artist

Sydney Yeager

The opulent, abstract work of Austin-based artist [Sydney Yeager] (https://sydneyyeager.com/home.html) will be featured in “liminal,” Jan. 14 – Feb. 15, 2019 at the Wright Gallery, Langford Architecture Center building A on the Texas A&M campus.

Yeager will explain her work in a walkthrough reception 11 a.m. Jan. 23 in the gallery.

“liminal” will feature large-scale abstract paintings that offer a collusion between fluid lines and  geometric shapes, a tangle of forms that implies a narrative of Yeager’s ability to adapt her work decades into her 30+ year career.

Yeager lays heavy brush marks onto a linen canvas that is either raw or lightly touched with a wash of color. This method holds little opportunity for revision, and requires a willingness to take on what is immediately given. The results of Yeager’s work are, by definition, liminal - occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold; relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.

“Working this way is consistent with my interest in motion and transitory forms, as each brush mark holds the possibility of altering the painting entirely,” Yeager said. “Together, the oppositional forms express a sense of imminent change. These forms are in a state of flux.”

Previously in the 2018-19 year, the Wright Gallery hosted exhibits by Jenn Hassin and digital artist Lisa Woods .
