Photographers will explore Texas’ character, mythology and environmental issues in “You Are Here: Texas Photographers Respond to the Texas Landscape,” an exhibit scheduled April 21 – June 2, 2016, in the Wright Gallery, Building A of the Langford Architecture Center on the Texas A&M campus.
An opening reception is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. April 21 in the gallery.
“The exhibit creates a conversation about the social, political, environmental, cultural, and personal issues that influence interpretations of the land around us through an exploration of the contemporary Texas landscape,” said exhibit curator Krista Steinke, instructional assistant professor of visualization. “Artists in the exhibit represent diverse approaches to style, process, and content, which will provide viewers with a rich visual and conceptual dialogue.”
Some of the work, she added, will address issues impacting the state’s borders and the environment, other works will celebrate mythology connected to the land and its history, and still other works will depict Bigfoot sighting locations, diminished small town life, urban sprawl, personal memory and other locations and topics.
The exhibit reception will be preceded by a 4:30 – 6 p.m. panel discussion of the show in the Technical Reference Center, second floor, Langford A.
Panelists will include Dornith Doherty, an exhibit artist and distinguished research professor of art at the University of North Texas, Penelope Boyer, director of the [Land Heritage Institute] (http://www.landheritageinstitute.org) in San Antonio, and Christian Brannstrom, professor of geographyand director of environmental programs at Texas A&M.
