Planning professionals can learn the latest in hazard resilience measures from three videos featuring presentations by hazard reduction and recovery experts from Texas A&M University. The new online learning module is offered by [Planetizen] (http://www.planetizen.com/) , an information exchange website for the urban planning, design and development community.
In “ [Developing a Fact Basis for Hazard Planning] (http://courses.planetizen.com/course/fact-hazard-planning) ,” Shannon van Zandt, director of Texas A&M’s [Master of Urban Planning] (http://laup.arch.tamu.edu/academics/graduate/mup/) program, presents a step-by-step model for incorporating physical and social vulnerability assessments in hazard and disaster plans.
Walter Gillis Peacock, director of the [Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center] (http://hrrc.arch.tamu.edu) , focuses on common planning tools and policies for hazard recovery and mitigation in [Disaster Resilience and Recovery Through Land Use Planning] (http://courses.planetizen.com/course/disaster-planning-resilience) .
Both presentations provide “real-world” examples from Hurricane Ike, which struck Galveston, Texas in 2008.
Himanshu Grover, who earned a [Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Sciences] (http://laup.arch.tamu.edu/academics/graduate/ursc/) at Texas A&M in 2010 and is on the urban planning faculty at the University of Buffalo, is also preparing a video for the module, part of the site’s growing library of planning-related courses.
