Art created by undergraduate visualization students ranging from the traditional media to interactive, computer-based installations, was showcased at a spring semester-culminating exhibit held May 1-2 at the Langford Architecture Center.

Earlier this month, the Maroon Coats, student ambassadors of the Texas A&M Foundation, organized an impromptu “thank you” note-writing session for students to share their gratitude with scholarship benefactors and gift givers who support College of Architecture programs.

Art and animations created by undergraduate visualization students will be showcased May 2 in a semester-culminating exhibition at the Langford Architecture Center.

Ethereal places blending fantasy- and science fiction-like imagery with the divine embody the art of Dick Davison, a professor of visualization at Texas A&M whose work is being shown at Dallas museum through June 22, 2012.

And the Oscar for Best Animated Feature goes to … “Rango,” the first feature-length animated movie created by the digital wizards — including eight former Texas A&M MS Visualization students — at Industrial Light & Magic. Aggie Vizzer Kevin Reuter worked for ILM as look development supervisor on the film.

Master of Science in Visualization students at Texas A&M and their counterparts at San Jose State University in California are collaborating in a virtual classroom this spring to create three dimensional, animated characters.

An upcoming edition of a classic textbook featuring a comprehensive collection of architectural drawing conventions and techniques will include examples of Texas A&M architecture and visualization student work.

Videos by Joshua Bienko, assistant professor of architecture, were part of an exhibit that ran through Jan. 7 at a Kansas City gallery that a critic called “smart and engaging work by artists who acknowledge the impossibility of originality in the 21st century.”

Nominations for the 2012 College of Architecture Outstanding Alumni Awards, which annually recognize former students of exceptional accomplishment, are being accepted through Feb. 10. Since its inception in 1997, less than one percent of the college’s former students have received the award, the college’s highest honor.

Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin had a chance to see how former students are redefining the entertainment industry during a Nov. 16 visit to the Bay Area campuses of Pixar Animation Studios and DreamWorks Animation SKG.

“Arlecchino,” the colorful, floral-patterned architectural installation adorning the wall and floor of the College of Architecture’s Azimuth Cafe, has helped earn its designer, Los Angeles artist Elena Manferdini, a $50,000 United States Artists Fellowship.

Students will have a unique opportunity to work with internationally renowned, contemporary artists in specialized workshops during the Spring 2012 Artist in Residence program at A&M’s College of Architecture. The workshops are open to anyone in the college, and no previous art experience is required.

As higher education leaders across the nation wrangle with budget constraints and consider reforms aimed at doing more with less, Texas A&M College of Architecture educators continue to embrace the studio, the time-tested cornerstone of design education, as the most critical component of modern design pedagogy.
