Prospective students can learn more about Texas A&M’s Urban and Regional Science doctoral program during an Oct. 21-23 open house, to be held in conjunction with the 14th annual College of Architecture Research Symposium: Natural, Built, Virtual.

Designing healthcare facilities in today’s world of accelerating change, uncertain economies and a growing population is the subject of this fall’s Architecture-For-Health lecture series at Texas A&M.

At an early age, Houston-based artist Rick Lowe became interested in learning what he could do to improve residents’ quality of life in low-income communities. He began, he said, by creating paintings and sculptures dealing with political and social issues.

Miguel Roldán, founding principal of R+B Architects in Barcelona and adjunct professor of architecture at Texas A&M’s study abroad program in Spain, discussed his firm’s projects Feb. 27 as part of the Spring 2012 Architecture Lecture Series.

Evidence-based design and eco-effective, or sustainable, design are fundamentally compatible despite some conflicts, concluded Mardelle Shepley, professor of architecture of Texas A&M, in a research paper she’s presenting this May at a conference in Beijing, China.

Roland Snooks, founding partner of Kokkugia, a progressive architecture and urban design practice, presented “Volatile Formation,” the final lecture in the Department of Architecture’s Spring 2012 Lecture Series, April 23 at Preston Geren Auitorium.

Two design educators from the United Kingdom, Jon Goodbun and Karin Jaschke, will present “Architecture and its Resources: Towards a New Materialist Practice,” 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 16 in Preston Geren Auditorium as part of Texas A&M’s Department of Architecture Lecture Series.

John McMorrough, chairman of the University of Michigan’s Architecture program, whose writings on the problematics of contemporary design include treatments of supergraphics, pedestrian malls and the apocalypse, appeared at Texas A&M’s Department of Architecture Lecture Series Feb. 27.

Former Rice School of Architecture dean Lars Lerup, whose work focuses on the intersection of nature and culture in the contemporary U.S. metropolis, and on Houston in particular, kicked off the Department of Architecture’s 2012 Spring Lecture Series with a Feb. 13 presentation about new urbanism.

At a Feb. 15 town hall-style meeting a distinguished panel will focus on how shifting perceptions of black culture, politics and ethnicity has affected the ways blacks are perceived and discussed in today’s culture.
